Raising resilient kids
Raising resilient kids

A while back I came across an article that spoke about “helicopter parenting”…parents that hover over their kids. This got my attention and I asked myself am I a helicopter parent?Do I want to be a helicopter parents? Based on the article, there were distinct signs that the answer was yes to the former question…so how do I answer the latter question?

I started researching more on the subject matter and this post will share some of my research.

How do I raise resilient kid/kids? A kid that can cope with challenges!

1.Teach your kid to talk about feelings

Make talking about feelings a daily topic of conversation.Ask your kid how they feel about different experiences in their life. For example:

  • When you meet people for the first time?
  • When you lose a game?
  • When a toy breaks?
  • When you are asked to do something you don’t want to do but need to do?

Adopt teachable moments to explore and discuss feelings. If you are reading a book or watching a movie with your child, ask them to think about how the characters feel. This will start helping them understand that feelings of sadness, disappointment, anger and frustration are completely normal;it teaches them that happiness is not possible every moment of every day.

2. Teach your kid healthy ways to cope with big emotions

Adopting these skills, empowers your kid to have some control over their emotions and that they can handle those emotions in a safe and healthy way.

Imagine a favorite place
Get a drink of water
Distraction by playing a game
Colour or draw
Build something with lego
Play soothing music
Take a break in a calming environment

3.Teach your kid to take deep breaths
A simple way you can teach them to take 5 deep breaths just using their hand. Position yourself so that you are at the same level with your child. Have them put up one hand, palm facing you and fingers spread. With your finger, start at the base of their thumb and breathe in while you move your hand up one side of their thumb. Move your finger down the other side of their thumb and breathe out. Do the same thing with the remaining four fingers, while both of you take deep breaths in and out. After you’ve reached the pinky finger, you’ll have done 5 complete deep breaths.(sourced and quoted from Janine Halloran)

This exercise aids in connecting with your child on their level.End the exercise with a hug or high five.

4. Create an environment for non scheduled activities.Play!

Allow some time outside of the routine of scheduled activities.Let your child simply play with open ended toys.Toys that are blocks, dolls, cars and icecream sticks.

Its a great stress reliever apart from it being activities nurturing a creative side.

Given your support and love, your child will learn how to enjoy the good times but weather the storm.

Happy parenting!!

Letter to my sisterhood

Sisterhood
Women empowerment

Life has been a blessing for me; I have an amazing 2-year-old daughter, supportive family and friends; launched my blog this year and get to work with good people in my team.
It was all not an easy journey where opportunities presented itself on a silver platter and I had to meet some frogs before I met my prince. I have learned some invaluable life lessons along the path of adulthood that I thought might help my fellow sisters with achieving  GIRLPOWER:
-Don’t let your biological clock decide when you need to get married. Follow your     instincts.

-Kids are not for everyone, if you don’t want any, don’t feel pressured into it.

-If you have a kid, its ok to be selfish and want some alone time, hell…its ok to be a little selfish in general.
-Do not get married because you feel like everyone else is doing it and you are getting older…NEVER EVER SETTLE!!!
-NEVER allow a person to abuse you, physically or emotionally. The biggest gifts my parents could have given me was sending me for martial arts classes for 11 years…I can confidentially say that it has helped me identify a dangerous situation and equipped me to have a chance to defend myself if I ever have to. Every female should have some form of self-defence training.
-Be confident and tell your partner what you want out of the relationship. Stand by your believes and values.
-Spirituality is important, it helped me find myself. Understand yourself and your needs.
– Become independent and self-sufficient.
-Don’t be with a partner that does not support your dreams, does not push you to be better or sits on their ass dishing out commands.

-Respect your body. Treat it like a temple..took me a long time to realise I was abusing my body with processed foods and sugar but I am in a better space.Reduce the junk food and increase clean eating.
-Wear sunscreen and moisturize….DAILY!
-Do something new or travel somewhere new every year.
-Remove toxic people from your life…they suck the life out of you.
-Save money.
-Be kind and live wisely.
P.S. Be glamorous!!!

Lots of Love

XOXO

Plant based 30 minute lunch meal prep

9 / 18 / 172 / 26 / 18

Plantbased meal

Purtassi is an auspicious time of the year for Hindus. We observe a vegetarian lifestyle for a month. This month I decided to follow a plant based lifestyle for a month and observe What happens to my body and spirituality.I am keeping a journal to diarise my journey and will share once it’s complete.

Being a working mum and wife, I knew that if I going to give myself a chance at success, then I need to plan and meal prep to ensure  I see this through the month. I don’t want to overload this post with too many recipes so I decided to phase it. My biggest challenge are work lunches for my husband, Jason, and myself. This is the driving reason I decide to meal prep a plant based lunch that you can eat cold or warm. This amount makes 4 servings and can be eaten by us for 2 lunches.

The quinoa goes on the stove first, while its cooking, I make the stir fry.

On medium heat, place coconut oil in non stick frying pan.Add Quorn savoury pieces and turmeric , fry until slightly brown.Turn heat to high, add all vegetables, salt and white pepper and stir fry until vegetables are cooked.I like mine crunchy so it cooks for about 5 minutes.Remove from heat and drizzle lemon infused olive oil.

When ready to eat, add Woolworths relish and sprinkle with chives.

Happy Eating!!!
